The best Mac notch apps in 2026

Notch apps turn the black cut-out at the top of a MacBook screen into something useful, like a Dynamic Island for your Mac. We checked every notable one on its own website: price, whether it works without a notch, what it's best at, and which ones are still around.

The quick picks

  • For developers and indie founders: NotchStack. Our own app, so weigh that. Twenty tools, including today’s revenue, Claude Code and Codex limits, and alerts when your agent finishes.
  • Most tools available today: OmniNotch ($19.99, on sale for $9.99). Twenty tools, the widest AI-limit and sales coverage.
  • Most polished Dynamic Island feel: Alcove ($14.99). Music, HUDs and Lock Screen widgets, done with care. Needs macOS 15.
  • Best free and open source: Boring Notch. Music, calendar and a file shelf with AirDrop.
  • AI agents only: Vibe Island ($19.99), a notch built around your AI agents and their quotas.

Not on the list as a pick: NotchNook. It was one of the best-known notch apps, but its page now returns an error and it isn’t sold. More on that below.

Disclosure

We make NotchStack. To keep this fair, every fact about other apps comes from that app’s own website, README or changelog, checked on October 9, 2026. Where an app’s site doesn’t mention something, we say so rather than guess. If we got something wrong, email us and we’ll correct it.

NotchStack: for people who ship

Our app; 3-day free trial at notchstack.app.

NotchStack puts twenty tools in the notch. It’s built around the things developers and founders check all day:

  • Revenue: today’s sales from Stripe or Dodo Payments, with read-only keys kept in the Keychain.
  • AI Usage: Claude Code and Codex session and weekly limits, and tokens used today.
  • Agent alerts: when Claude Code or Codex finishes or needs you, a card drops from the notch with the project and the agent’s last message.
  • The everyday tools:
    • Clipboard history and a file shelf
    • Calendar, reminders and to-dos
    • A quick note and timers
    • Now Playing, weather and stocks
    • A System monitor, a converter, emoji, a teleprompter, a camera mirror and Shortcuts

Even closed, the notch shows live information beside it: music and timers, or your agent’s status next to today’s revenue. There are three themes (Minimal, Playful and Neon). On Macs without a notch, NotchStack draws a floating one.

Price: €4.99 for the first 50 buyers (code EARLYBIRD), then €9.99, one-time, for up to 3 Macs. 3-day free trial.

Pick it if you build with Claude Code or Codex, sell a product, or simply want the most tools in one place.

OmniNotch: twenty tools, available now

OmniNotch calls itself “the Mac notch app with twenty tools”.

Its Sales tool combines “Stripe, Shopify, Lemon Squeezy, Gumroad, Dodo, Polar, and Paddle in one total”. Its AI Usage tool shows “session and weekly limits for Claude, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, and Grok”.

It also has:

  • a searchable clipboard
  • a file shelf with AirDrop
  • Now Playing
  • a calendar
  • Ask Omni, an on-device assistant built on Apple Intelligence

On Macs without a notch it “draws its own floating notch at the top of the screen”. It needs macOS 14.

Price: $19.99 one-time, currently on a $9.99 sale, for up to 3 Macs. There’s a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Pick it if you sell on several storefronts or use several AI coding tools, and want to buy today. → NotchStack vs OmniNotch

Alcove: the polished Dynamic Island

Alcove sells itself as the “Dynamic Island for Mac” and focuses on doing a few things beautifully:

  • Music, with “deeper Spotify, AutoMix, and AirPlay support”
  • Customizable HUDs for volume and brightness
  • An expanded calendar
  • Lock Screen widgets

A recent version added “a pill shape for notchless displays”. Its FAQ notes that Alcove “relies on private APIs”.

Price: $14.99 one-time, with a 72-hour trial, for up to 3 devices. It needs macOS 15.

Pick it if music and system moments are what you want from the notch. → NotchStack vs Alcove

Boring Notch: the best free option

Boring Notch is open source under GPL-3.0. Its README promises “a dynamic music control center”, calendar integration and “a handy file shelf with AirDrop support”. A prerelease adds notification mirroring and more accent-colour options. The latest stable version is v2.7.3; v2.8 is in release-candidate testing.

The README doesn’t say whether it works on Macs without a notch. It needs macOS 14.

Pick it if you want free, open source and focused. → NotchStack vs Boring Notch

Vibe Island: built for AI agents

Vibe Island describes itself as a “Dynamic Island for your AI agents”. It promises you’ll “see your remaining Claude, Codex… quota at a glance”. On Macs without a notch it shows “a compact floating bar”.

Price: $19.99 one-time, with a free trial.

Pick it if you only want agent and quota information, not a general toolbox.

More free and open-source options

Notchy is free (“Free forever”). It covers music, clipboard, timers and AI usage, needs macOS 13, and on Macs without a notch it “floats the same island as a pill”. Its site showed an update on September 25, 2026.

DynamicNotch is free under GPL-3.0 and supports “non-notched MacBooks, iMac, Mac mini, or external monitors” with a floating capsule. It needs macOS 14.6.

Atoll is a free, media-focused “Dynamic Island for macOS” under GPL v3. Its requirements list a “MacBook with a notch”, so it isn’t one for Mac mini users.

NotchDrop is an MIT-licensed project for “temporary storing files and AirDrop”. It’s narrow, but good at that one job.

DynamicLake is a paid app sold through Gumroad. It covers notifications, file drag-and-drop, AirDrop and a timer.

What happened to NotchNook?

NotchNook, from lo.cafe, appeared in most notch-app roundups. As of October 9, 2026, its product page returns an error and the app isn’t sold.

The lo.cafe homepage carries a statement from its founders. It says that “NOOTCH is our rebuilt and reimagined evolution of NotchNook” and that NotchNook lifetime licence holders will get 90% off.

NOOTCH is in closed beta, needs macOS 15.6, and doesn’t show a price yet. If an older roundup recommends NotchNook, that advice is out of date.

How to choose

Start with two questions:

  1. Do you have a notch? On a Mac mini, an iMac or an external display, pick an app that draws its own floating notch: NotchStack, OmniNotch, Notchy, DynamicNotch or Vibe Island. Alcove offers a pill shape. Our guide to getting a notch on a Mac without one goes deeper.
  2. What do you want it for?
    • Music and system moments: Alcove, Boring Notch or Atoll.
    • A toolbox: NotchStack or OmniNotch.
    • Agents and quotas: NotchStack, OmniNotch or Vibe Island.

A few more things are worth checking before you buy:

  • macOS version. Alcove needs macOS 15, and NOOTCH needs 15.6.
  • Pricing model. Most of these apps are one-time purchases. NotchStack, OmniNotch and Alcove each allow three Macs per licence.
  • Privacy. Notch apps can see your music, calendar and clipboard. Check that the app keeps that data on your Mac and doesn’t need an account.
  • Running two at once. Two notch apps draw in the same place. Run one at a time.
